Documents Required to File Income Tax Return in Pakistan 2026: Complete Checklist

Filing an income tax return in Pakistan is much easier when your documents are ready before you open the FBR IRIS portal. Most delays and notices come from missing records, not from the filing itself. This checklist covers what salaried people, business owners and freelancers should collect for the tax year 2026 return (income earned 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026).

Documents everyone needs

  • CNIC and your NTN
  • IRIS portal login details and the registered mobile number and email
  • Bank statements for every account for 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026
  • Last year’s return and closing wealth statement

Salaried individuals

  • Annual salary certificate showing gross salary, allowances and tax deducted
  • Monthly salary slips, so you can reconcile them with your bank credits
  • Withholding tax certificate from your employer
  • Details of any bonus, gratuity or provident fund withdrawal

Business owners and self-employed

  • Business NTN and registration documents
  • Sales and purchase invoices
  • Profit and loss statement and balance sheet
  • Withholding tax certificates on your receipts
  • Rent agreements and utility bills for business premises
  • Stock valuation, if you hold inventory
  • Copies of sales tax returns, if you are registered for sales tax

Freelancers and IT exporters

  • Bank statements showing foreign remittance credits
  • Proof that income came through official banking channels
  • Client invoices and platform statements (Payoneer, Wise, PayPal or similar)
  • Expense records: software, internet, equipment, co-working
  • Your PSEB registration, if you use the IT export regime

For your wealth statement

  • Property documents and current estimated value
  • Vehicle registration documents
  • Closing balances of all bank accounts
  • Shares, mutual funds and National Savings certificates
  • Gold and jewellery, if you declare them
  • Loans you gave or took
  • Estimated household expenses for the year

Your closing wealth this year should reconcile with last year’s closing wealth plus income, minus expenses. A mismatch is one of the most common triggers for an FBR query.

Quick tips before you file

  1. Match your declared income with your bank credits. The FBR can compare them.
  2. Keep every withholding certificate. It supports the tax you claim as already paid.
  3. Declare foreign income received through banks, not cash or informal channels.
  4. Save PDFs of your filed return and payment challan for at least six years.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to upload these documents to IRIS?

Usually no. You enter the figures in the return and wealth statement, but you must keep the documents because the FBR can ask for them in a notice or audit.

Can I file without bank statements?

It is not advisable. Bank records are the main way income and wealth are cross-checked.

What if I already received an FBR notice?

Do not ignore it. Read the section and deadline, gather the supporting records above and send a documented reply.
