FBR IRIS Login Problems in Pakistan: Password Reset and Account Recovery Guide

You open the FBR IRIS portal a few days before the return deadline, type your CNIC, and the login fails. It is one of the most common reasons taxpayers in Pakistan lose time at filing season. The good news: almost every IRIS login problem has a simple fix, and knowing it in advance saves you a trip to the tax office.

Why IRIS logins fail

Most failures come from a short list of causes: a mistyped CNIC or registration number, a forgotten password, an expired one-time code, or contact details on your profile that no longer exist (an old SIM or email). A less obvious cause is using the wrong system, since the older e.FBR portal and IRIS are not the same login.

How to reset a forgotten password

  1. Open the official IRIS login page and choose the “Forgot Password” option under the password box.
  2. Enter your CNIC or registration number exactly as it appears on your profile.
  3. Pick the registered mobile number or email that should receive the verification code.
  4. Enter the code quickly, since it expires. If nothing arrives, check your spam folder and your SMS inbox before requesting another.
  5. Create a new password that meets the portal’s stated rules, then log in again.

Rules and screens can change, so always follow what the official portal shows you on the day.

Common error messages and what to do

  • Invalid credentials: recheck the CNIC format and password, or use the reset option instead of guessing repeatedly.
  • Code expired: request a fresh code and enter it right away.
  • Account locked: repeated wrong attempts can lock the account. Wait and try again, or call the FBR helpline.
  • No mobile or email linked: your profile contact details need updating, which usually means a visit to your Regional Tax Office.

If you no longer have your registered mobile or email

This is the hardest case, because the reset code goes to a number or address you cannot reach. Check first whether you saved a secondary email. If not, carry your original CNIC to your Regional Tax Office and ask for the contact details to be updated, then reset the password. The FBR helpline can also guide you, though manual updates take longer than the online route.

Stop it happening again

  • Update your IRIS contact details whenever you change your SIM or email.
  • Keep your login in a password manager, not on a loose note.
  • Never share the one-time code with anyone, including someone offering to “help” over the phone.
  • Log in once a month, not only on deadline day, so problems show up early.

Frequently asked questions

Can a tax adviser reset my IRIS password for me?

The reset code goes to you, so the adviser cannot bypass it. A registered adviser can, however, guide you through recovery and the profile update.

Is my login the same as my NTN?

For most individuals the login uses your CNIC, which is your NTN. Companies use their registration details.

What if my filing deadline is close?

Start the recovery today. Manual updates at the tax office take days, and the deadline will not wait.

Stuck at the portal? BTaxFiler can guide you through account recovery and file your return online. See our income tax return service, the NTN registration guide, or book a free consultation.
